sir,
The Chinese Minister came to see me, He wished to
know whether it was a fact, as had been stated in an
American newspaper, that the British Embassy in Lisbon had
protested to the Portuguese Government against the agle of
Macao to Japan. I told Mr. Le that the statenout was
unfounded. I had seen the rep irt in the Daily Herald that
negotiations were in view for tie sale in question at a price
of twenty million pounds, but I was sufficiently convinced of
the falsity of the rumour to re ard it as unworthy of attention.
I had consequently not felt cal ed on to mention the matter to
you, nor had I received any ins ructions on the subject.

P.S. I beg to add that the general question of JapanseO
activities in Macao is last referred to in your despatch
No. 114 of April 4th (F 1869/72′ /10).
